What is Alum, Fitkari or Phitkari?

Alum is a natural mineral compound made of potassium aluminum sulfate. It’s available in both block and powdered forms and is widely used in skincare for its astringent and antibacterial properties.

Benefits of Using Alum on Skin

How to use alum for skin tightening

Alum is an excellent natural astringent. When applied to the face, it tightens the skin, reduces the appearance of pores, and gives a smooth and firm look. Hence, this is particularly beneficial for Indian skin, which is often prone to open pores due to high humidity levels.

Fights Acne and Pimples

With its antibacterial and antifungal properties, alum can help combat acne-causing bacteria. It also dries out pimples, reducing inflammation and redness—common issues for Indian skin, especially during hot summers.

Reduces Oiliness

Alum is effective in controlling excess oil production, making it a boon for those with oily or combination skin types. Regular use can help maintain a balanced skin texture.

Helps with Facial Hair Reduction

Alum mixed with rose water is often used as a natural remedy to slow down facial hair growth. This has been a popular practice in many Indian households for generations.

Skin Lightening Properties

Alum is believed to reduce dark spots and pigmentation when used over time. This can be helpful for Indian skin, which is prone to hyperpigmentation due to sun exposure.

Side Effects of Using Alum on Skin

Using alum on the skin can cause irritation, dryness, and redness, especially for sensitive skin. Prolonged use may lead to excessive dryness, itching, or even allergic reactions. In some cases, alum can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance, leading to inflammation or breakouts. If not used properly, it may also cause a burning sensation or minor cuts, particularly when used as an aftershave. It is advisable to do a patch test before applying alum to larger areas of the skin.
